The water

Water by invitation — never by force

Nobody ever made a water dog by throwing one in. How confident, keen water work is actually built — warm, shallow, and entirely on the dog’s vote.

There’s an old, bad idea that refuses to die: the dog won’t swim, so someone “helps” — a toss off the dock, a drag into the lake. It feels decisive. What it builds is a dog that associates water with panic, and that association is brutally hard to undo. The rule for water is the same as the rule for gunfire: the dog’s vote is the only vote.

Stack the deck, then wait

Pick a warm day, calm shallow water, a gentle entry — a beach grade, not a bank drop. Wade in yourself if you like; bring the toy the dog loves most. Let it play at the edge. Toss the bumper into an inch of water, then a hand’s depth, then to where a chest gets wet. The dog decides every step. Most drivey dogs talk themselves into swimming inside a session or three, because the fun is out there and nothing bad has ever happened in the wet.

If the dog hesitates, the session isn’t failing — it’s working. Stay shallower, keep it a game, end happy. Cold water, current, and a scary first entry are how water-shy dogs get made; patience is how water dogs get made.

Confidence first, distance second

Once the dog swims by choice, range builds itself fast — lengthen the retrieves, then introduce a small jump-in from a low bank, always warm, always keen. Save cold water, chop, and real conditions for a dog that already loves swimming; by then they’re an adventure, not a threat. A season of easy water beats one dramatic afternoon every time — and the dog that chose the water is the one that will launch into it at first light in October.
